Maryland: Asbestos related death

Between 1979 and 1999 more than 1,000 citizens died of asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. More than half of these victims lived in the Baltimore region, the most populous population in the state. The mortality rate for asbestos in Maryland is slightly higher than the average for the country. In addition, more than 60% of these deaths were caused by asbestos, a lung cancer disease, while infertile cancer caused less than 40% due to mesothelioma.

Early diagnosis of these conditions is absolutely necessary to increase the chances of survival. In fact, if diagnosed at an early stage, asbestosis is not immediately fatal. Who is the risk of mesothelioma cancer?

Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNLCR), Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. Is a US federal laboratory run by the National Cancer Institute, a part of the NIH. This laboratory works with both public and private organizations to address urgent public health problems such as cancer.

FNLCR is an important part of the research initiative created by NCI to increase the scientific understanding of cancers of mutation in the RAS gene family. Researchers have found that about one-third of all cancers in humans are mediated by RAS gene mutations. Often, the treatment of RAS-induced cancers is difficult and in some cases can be aggravated with present-day therapies.

The national laboratory conducts detailed biomedical research and protects a large pack of highly integrated technologies used to fight cancer.

This national laboratory is home to two GMP plants that routinely produce drugs used in clinical trials for cancer research. One of the facilities conducts drug discovery and development for NCI.

The University of Maryland Marlene and the Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC) dates back to 1965 and was appointed as the National Cancer Institute’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in 2008.

The mission of this cancer center is to conduct highly advanced cancer clinical trials that will influence the understanding and treatment of all forms of cancer and provide the best clinical care for cancer patients in Maryland and the world.

This center’s interactive, multidisciplinary research approach is to acquire new findings in cancer biology and research programs to develop and implement new cancer treatments. Researchers are trying to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms underlying specific cancer types and apply the findings to cancer patients.
