How is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?

Story of the Hospital and Mesothelioma Belleties

Mesothelioma is more frequent in patients who have lived in the so-called “white soil” in our country. In addition, cases that occur in the lung membrane in those who have a profession with asbestos exposure suggest mesothelioma.

The most important symptom that emerges in patients is chest pain. This is followed by symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue and weakness during effort.

Examination

A special examination of the mesothelioma is not available. Findings that are detected in any kind of pulmonary disease are detected: the patient has a decrease in respiratory sounds on the lung side.

Radiological Investigations and PET-CT

Normal lung graphs are not enough to diagnose mesothelioma. In cases where mesothelioma is suspected and lung thickening or fluid thickening is detected on lung grafts, further investigation is always done.

Computerized tomography MR

As shown in the picture below, thickening areas or fluid collection on the lung gyrus are detected in the computed tomography. The red arrow in the picture points to mesotheliomed areas.

MR is useful to show the tumor in more detail about the diaphragm and heart conditions. If there is doubt, MR examination should be done in computerized tomography. Otherwise MR is not required.

A mesothelioma that lies beneath the diaphragm, extends toward the abdominal region, or has passed the heart membrane passes the third stage.

Detecting the stage of the disease is crucial for the selection of appropriate treatment. For this reason, detailed examinations are essential before selecting appropriate treatment.

The MR image in the adjacent image shows that the mesothelioma did not exceed the diaphragm.

PET-CT

If a lesion in the lung membrane is suspected mesothelioma is suspected, PET-CT is researched to see if this lesion consumes energy. If PET-CT does not have energy consumption (involvement), this lesion is extremely unlikely to be a mesothelioma.

PET-CT is also important to demonstrate whether mesothelioma has spread to other parts of the body.

No treatment of mesothelioma without PET-CT should be initiated, no matter what treatment.

Biopsy

If liquid is available, it is a method used to diagnose mesothelioma of the needle biopsy or thoracoscopic biopsy of malignancy to take a fluid sample with the help of a needle (thoracentesis). Pathology examination should not only identify the mesothelioma, but also the type of mesothelioma. (more…)

Mezotelyoma

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a disease that begins with accumulation of water in the chest cavity before the lung. The accumulation of water in the lungs is the sum of the edema of the lungs.

Malignant tumors of the lung membrane (pleura).

The so-called asbestos and erionite are usually found in people who have been exposed for many years.

Many patients do not have any asbestos or erionite exposure.

Familial predisposition has been reported.

Significant reduction in the disease has been observed since asbestos has been prohibited from being used in the industry.

Frequent cases of severe chest pain, weight loss, and cough occur in patients.

Water usually collects in the chest cavity, and the effect of this water can cause breathlessness.

In the picture below, we see a 52 year-old male patient with computed tomography and thoracoscopy images of mesothelioma on the right side.

Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is the type of cancer that occurs in tissues that cover the surface of some internal organs. It is also called “lung cancer” because it usually appears in the lung. However, it rarely starts and spreads in the midge, the heart and other organs.

What are Mesothelioma Symptoms?

The indication for lung cancer is usually a few years after exposure to triggering factors. Some of the symptoms are:

Difficulty breathing
Pain under the rib cage
Night sweats, high fever
Not coughing
Fingertip swelling
Unexplained weight loss

The indications of mesothelioma seen in the mesothelioma are:

Pain, swelling or tuber formation in the abdominal region
Loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss
Diarrhea or constipation.
